Bushing vs Threaded 1911 Compensators — Which Should You Buy?

You've decided your 1911 needs a compensator. Good move. Now you've got a fork in the road that most buyers don't realize exists until they're $300 deep into the wrong path: bushing-style or threaded.
These are two completely different products. They install differently, cost different amounts, require different parts, and suit different shooters. Picking the wrong one is the most common — and most expensive — 1911 upgrade mistake.
Here's the honest breakdown.
What's actually different between the two
A threaded compensator is a separate part that screws onto the muzzle of a barrel with external threads. To use one, your barrel itself needs to be threaded — and stock 1911 barrels almost never are. So you're buying a comp and a new barrel. The comp times to the barrel (oriented vertically) and locks in place with a jam nut, set screw, or crush washer.
A bushing-style compensator replaces the factory 1911 barrel bushing. The bushing is the ring at the front of the slide that supports the barrel during recoil and is removed every time you field-strip your gun. A bushing comp drops into that same position, with the barrel still passing through it like normal.
Same job — redirecting gas to reduce muzzle rise. Completely different installation.
Cost comparison: what you'll actually spend
This is where most people get surprised.
Threaded compensator total cost:
Threaded aftermarket barrel: $180–$320 (Storm Lake, KKM, Bar-Sto, etc.)
Threaded compensator: $130–$220 (Wilson Combat, EFK, Tactical Solutions, etc.)
Gunsmithing for fitting and timing: $75–$150
Total: $385–$690
Bushing-style compensator total cost:
Bushing compensator: $50–$120
Gunsmithing: typically $0
Total: $50–$120
The bushing path is roughly one-fifth the cost. For most shooters, that gap alone settles the decision. But cost isn't the only factor — performance and use case matter too.
Performance: do you actually get more from threaded?
Yes, sometimes — but less than the price gap suggests.
Threaded comps can be physically longer, with more port volume and more aggressive gas management. At the top end of competitive shooting, the best threaded comps deliver more rise reduction than bushing comps. We're talking maybe 50–60% reduction versus 35–45% for quality bushing designs.
But that performance gap shows up mostly at the extremes — full-power Major Power Factor loads in Open division competition, where milliseconds matter. For 95% of shooters using factory ammo, the practical difference between a good bushing comp and a good threaded comp is small. Both make follow-up shots noticeably faster. Both reduce felt recoil. Both make your 1911 more pleasant to shoot.
The real performance question isn't which type is better. It's whether the bushing comp you're looking at is well-engineered, or a cheap import. A well-designed bushing comp will outperform a poorly designed threaded comp every time.
Fitting and installation: how much hassle?
Bushing-style installation:
Field-strip your 1911
Remove the original bushing (it twists out — same as cleaning)
Insert the new bushing comp
Reassemble
Total time: under a minute. No tools beyond what you already use to clean the gun. The only fitting consideration is whether your specific 1911 falls within standard factory tolerances — most do.
Threaded installation:
Remove and store the original barrel
Fit the new threaded barrel to your slide and frame (often needs minor work)
Time the compensator to the barrel so the ports point straight up at full lock-up
Permanently secure with thread locker, jam nut, or pin
Verify slide cycling and adjust recoil spring weight if needed
This is gunsmith work for most shooters. Even people comfortable doing it themselves will spend an afternoon on it. And once it's locked in, reversing the modification means swapping the entire barrel back out.
Reversibility: keeping your factory configuration
Big point that often gets overlooked. A bushing comp is fully reversible. Pop it out, reinstall your original bushing, and your 1911 is back to factory in two minutes. Selling the gun? Going to a match that prohibits comps? Hunting in a state with weird rules? No problem.
A threaded barrel and comp setup is reversible only in the sense that you can swap the barrel back. But you've still permanently changed the gun's identity in a meaningful way, and your original barrel may or may not still be on hand.
Competition use: what each division allows
USPSA Open division: Both bushing and threaded comps are legal. Open division shooters at the top level almost universally run threaded comps because the longer comp length squeezes out the last few percent of performance. But a quality bushing comp is competitive in Limited Optics and at the club level.
USPSA Limited, Production, Carry Optics, Single Stack: No compensators allowed. Period. Both types are prohibited.
IDPA: No compensators allowed in any division.
Steel Challenge: Compensators allowed in Open divisions.
3-Gun: Generally allowed in Open divisions, prohibited in Limited and Heavy.
Always check current rules with your sanctioning body — these change. The pattern: serious competition Open divisions allow both, restricted divisions allow neither.

Use this to pick your lane:
Bushing-style is the right call if:
You want to keep your factory barrel
You shoot recreationally, casually competitively, or at club-level USPSA Open
You want a reversible upgrade
You don't want to spend $400+ on the comp setup
You don't want to deal with a gunsmith
Your 1911 is a factory production model (Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Sig, S&W, Ruger, Dan Wesson, etc.)
Threaded is the right call if:
You're a serious USPSA Open competitor pushing for top-percent finishes
Money isn't a constraint and absolute performance is
You're already running an aftermarket competition build with multiple modifications
You have or want a custom 1911 that's already been gunsmithed
You don't mind permanently modifying your pistol
